Forever in bud

Question

My Orchid
I have a dendrobrium Phalenpenopis (sorry if my spelling is attrocious) I have two large flower buds on the second spike that seem to be taking forever to bloom. It seems to be getting enough light (both natural and artificial) but they have been on the spike for over 6 weeks now and one is just starting to open up. The plant was not in the greatest condition when I had gotten it with some root rot and it dropped two of the smaller leaves but I've repotted it in an arieal orchid pot and I give it 6 ounces of a mix of water and Worm Tea once a week. Is it normal for this plant to take so long. I've only lost 2 out of the 8 flowers on it that were open when I bought it. The buds look healthy.

Answer
Cheryl, it is unclear from your question how long you have had the plant. If you repotted it while it was in spike, that could have disturbed the roots that fed the flower buds and is often responsible for bud failure.  It is generally recommended to not repot while orchids are in spike.  Having said that, you might still have younger buds develop once the root system stabilizes. Keep doing what you are doing and be patient.  You may yet have some buds develop which will open normally.  It does take a month or more for the large flowered dendrobiums to open their buds.
