Photosynthesis in orchid

Question
Hi Wyane King,

Photosynthesis in orchid can happen in day time or night time?
Some say night time only & water, fertilize at night.

Photosynthesis can happen in root as well as leaves?

Thanks,
Nwe Lay

Answer
In general, photosynthesis in leaves occurs in the presence of light and carbon dioxide. Orchid roots also contain chlorophyll and may photosynthesize in the presence of light. In the absence of light, the compounds formed during photosynthesis are synthesized into proteins and oxygen is a by-product. Water and nutrients can be used in both parts of the cycle. In general, it is best to water and feed early in the day but the argument for doing so has little to do with photosynthesis.  Remember that once you water and/or feed, the potting mix retains that moisture and the velamin of the roots also stores water and nutrients.  The reason for watering early in the day is to allow drying of plant tissues before nightfall and prevent adventitious bacteria and fungi from getting established in the plant tissues.
