anthurium lava plant

Question
I have had this plant for about 2 months, it has 6 large leaves and about 6 smaller ones. When I first acquired this plant it had a white flower which lasted for about 3 weeks. The 4" long by 2" deep lava rock is kept in about 1/4" water. It is in an area of bright but not direct sunlight. The leaves are getting brown spots which then enlarge and I am afraid it is in the process of dying. Can you help?

Answer
Joe,

These plants are native to Hawaii where they grow in sandy vocanic soil that drains well.  Did the care instructions tell you to keep it in water all the time? Anthuriums do not usually like being kept that constantly wet. I would try letting it dry out some between waterings.  Does the water you are using have chlorine or flouride in it? If so that could be part of your problem.  If so let it sit in an open bucket for 48 hours to allow the chlorine and flouride to evaporate.  Good luck.
