Repotting of Dracaena Marginata

Question
Hi Mr.Creed,

I just recently purchased a baby Dracaena from the local walmart store here in the New smyrna beach, florida area. I would like to put it in a larger pot since I see roots growing out of the drainage holes. What would be the best soil and Im not to sure on the light supply either.  I would like to keep it outside but I think the afternoon sun would be to hot for it. Im from colorado and I just cant get over the way these people grow all this gorgeous foliage down here outside.  Any help would be appreciated..

Answer
Hi Jo Ann,

It is best not to repot your new plant just now. It needs to adjust to its new environment for several months before it is repotted. Even so, the presence of roots growing out of the drainage holes does not necessarily mean it needs repotting. Can you tell me the height of the plant and the width of the pot? A photo send to my e-mail address below would also help.

The light that is required for a Dracaena marginata depends on how it was grown. If it was grown for outdoor use, then the foliage is adapted to some direct outdoor light. However, if the nursery grew it with the intention of its use as an indoor houseplant, then it must be protected
from any outdoor direct sun at all times; keep it in a shaded spot.

I look forward to hearing back from you.
