kit for child

Question
Hello Will.

I am looking to buy a seed/pot/soil kit for my daughter for a windowsill. We have excellent light all year long (direct south and east). Ideally we would find something which grows quickly and flowers well even in the fall.  I am leary of the offerings of non-plant stores for many reasons, but mainly because since it is already nearly autumn, I fear we will not have enough hours of sunlight to grow anything from seed.

Any ideas for plant and/or place to buy online? (we live in NYC)

Thanks in advance.

Answer
Hi Liz,

Although it is customary to start seeds in the early spring, you could start them in the fall, particularly if it is intended as a learning experience for your daughter. Your plants will be grown indoors so cold temps are not a problem.

If your windows are unobstructed by buildings across the street, then your light should be adequate to grow standard flowering plants such as Impatiens and Geraniums. They may not flourish as they would if started in the spring, but they still should flower for you.

I am not really familiar with the various kits that are available. I am sure they all work pretty well if you follow directions. It is mostly a question of how elaborate a setup you want and how much you are willing to pay.

Alternatively, you could use a damp potting mix of peat moss and perlite put into plastic trays or dishes and sprinkle the seeds into them. Cover them with plastic and keep them out of direct sun until you see them start to germinate (sprout). Then remove the plastic and move the seedlings to a sunny location.

Chelsea Garden Center probably has seed packets and may have a seed starter kit. You may also want to check the Plant Market on 28th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. Take your daughter with you so she can see some beautiful specimen plans and gorgeous flowers. All of the shops there are open to the public.

Let me know if you have further questions.
