fern?


Question
wow, this site is kewl.  my gf just gave me this plant but i don't know what it is.  it has funny looking fuzzy things poking out of the bottom of the plant.  do you know what this is and how to care for it?

Hi Betty,

Thanks for the photo. I cannot see enough of the plant foliage to tell exactly which fern you have, although it is probably a rabbit's foot or bears paw fern or a relative of one of them.

The fuzzy thing sticking out of the pot is a rhizome or creeping root that grows above ground. It will elongate and gradually spread out over the edges of the pot. Others will follow. Eventually they can almost completely cover up the pot. Leaf fronds will continue to grow out of the rhizomes.
