Discolring leaves

Question
Dear Darlene,
I just received a 4in. assort. Bromeliad as a gift. However, it didn't come with an information tag.  I have given it filtered city water and have kept the soil moist.  It receives defused light from our picture window that faces east.  It is a beautiful plant but I don't now how to care for it.  I have only had it for about 2 wks.and since it has been in my care, the leaves are turning pale or light brown in some areas. I would appreciate any help or advice you could give in this matter.
Sincerely,
Dawn

Answer
Dawn,

First we need to determine exactly what kind of bromeliad it is. You can email me a picture to [email protected]    Or you can go to this website   http://www.bsi.org/  then click on Genera Gallery and browse through the pictures and see if you can figure out exactly what you have.

From the light brown spots I suspect it was already blooming for awhile when it was purchased for you. They bloom for 3-6 months but you never know how old they are when you buy them.  From the pale green leaves I suspect it is also not getting enough light.  Most bromeliads need bright light. It needs to be sitting  on the windowsill of that east windo with the drapes open all day.

Either email me that picture or let me know if you figure out exactly what type of bromeliad you have and I can give you further care instructions. Good luck.

Darlene
