type of houseplant

Question
I would like to know what you might suggest for a tallish houseplant (6-7 ft) that will be between 2 windows, but not in direct sunlight.  I tried a ficus that had seemed to do well indoors, but it promptly got sick...I know they are finicky, and I need something that is NOT!

Answer
You could try schefflera, also called "umbrella tree".  A favorite of mine are Dracaenas; there are quite a few varieties of dracaenas, (the name means "dragon tree").  They grow to be 5-7 feet tall or more.  A variety of dracaena which is very easy to care for and almost impossible to kill is the 'Corn plant'.  Its leaves resemble those of a corn stalk.  A Sanseveria (mother-in-law's tongue; also called "snake plant") is always a good choice, and they grow to be quite large over time.  You could consider one of the palms; you know how large they grow!  Just take a walk through a garden center looking for the taller varieties of plants, and you will get some ideas.  If you are not familiar with a certain plant ask someone, or look it up in one of the handy reference books most large stores have for customers.
