Cyclamen looking poorly

Question
I had this beautiful plant, thought I was doing everything right, have it where it gets sun but not too much, kept it where it was in a cooler room with no drafts, now the stems are turning to mush, flowers too, I water it by placing it in a bowl of water for a while when the soil starts to dry, never let it dry totally, I moved it to the kitchen now and it is on the counter top under the window, I don't know if this will help or not but the few leaves that are left were standing up today, now what do you think I should do?  Also should I cut the dead mushy looking stems or leave them alone?  Thank you

Answer
Hi Beth,

Cyclamen are not easy plants. They do require cool temps, but also bright light and soil that is allowed to dry out in between waterings. The symptoms you describe suggest soil that was kept too moist, although inadequate light may be a contributing factor.

A north window sill is the best location for a cyclamen. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out in between thorough waterings. I prefer top watering, but if you bottom water, do not leave it sitting in water for more than 30 minutes.

In warmer temps, Cyclamen often go into dormancy after flowering. Typically that happens in the summer, so it does not apply in this case.

Remove the mushy stems as they will not revive. Give it more light and less water and you should see some gradual recovery. If it continues to decline it is because the roots have already rotted.
