care of Aloe plant

Question
Someone gave me a beautiful aloe plant.  I know by experience aloe has a healing effect.  I am not sure about the care. HOw much moisture to apply to the plant and do I leave it in the sunshine or in a less lit area. Thank you for any advice.

Answer
Hi Annie,

Aloes do best in small pots so that they are moderately potbound and dry out almost completely every 7-10 days. The soil should be quite porous.

Keep it in your sunniest location and water it thoroughly (until a bit of water trickles through the drainage holes) whenever the soil is dry almost to the bottom of the pot.

Fertilize it monthly at half-strength, but only when it is healthy and putting out new growth.

You can break off a leaf at any time to get the juice without fear of damaging the plant.
