Half brown leaves on a tropical plant

Question
Hey there, hope you can help my plant! I have a Dracaena Sanderiana or something like that!  I have two of them, different colors.  I just moved recently, and shortly before the move they both started turning brown not only on the edges, but now half of the leaf is brown!  One website said to keep those plants moist at all times, but another said to let it completely dry out first.  A couple times I've forgotten to water them, they turned slightly brown and then I watered them and the color came back.  The pots are approx. 8" across and 12" deep.  one of the pots had three separate plants in it, one has already completely died.  Please help!

Answer
Hi Lisa,

Your questions has raised many questions for me.

First, I need to know if your plants are indeed D. sanderiana. This plant comes with all green leaves (commonly sold in water as 'Lucky bamboo") and it has a variation with green and white leaves. There are no other colors. If yours has reds or yellows, then it is another plant altogether. You can email me a photo if you are unsure of its ID.

Leaves that turn brown never turn back to green again. So I am not sure what to make of your comment about the color coming back.

There are many causes of leaf browning, including both under and over watering, using hard water, over fertilizing, and inadequate light. Without more details from you about the available light and your fertilizer and watering routines, as well as your water quality, I cannot give you much help. I also need to have some idea as to the height of these plants. Again, photos sent to me at [email protected] would be most helpful to my efforts to help you.

I look forward to your reply.

Regards,
Will Creed
