philodendron

Question
My plant drips. It had a great deal of white mold on it so I hosed it off and sprayed the leaves throughly with a house plant spray as I thought it might have a mite on it, but it still is dripping. The mold seems to be gone. What is wrong with the plant and what can I do about it.

Answer
Dear TJ, I suspect that the white mold on your plant is actually mealybugs, a slow moving variety of scale.  All scales produce honeydew, a dripping substance, which can often attract ants and sometimes you get a black mold with this as well.  The important thing to do is to thoroughly kill the mealybugs.  For this problem, I am going to suggest that you spray the plant with SunSpray, a horticultural oil which will smother the mealybugs and help to dry up the honeydew.  Spray the plant thoroughly, tops and bottoms of leaves and all along the stems.  Put the plant in a bright area (not an extremely hot place) and after a few hours the oil will have dried the bugs out.  The next day you can wash the plant off.  You will probably need to treat the plant every week to two weeks for about a month but it will recover.  Alternatively, you could also use a product called Ferti-Lome Triple Action Plus if can't find the other.  It is not an oil, but it will also kill the bugs, but you will still need to spray several times.  Be sure to write back if you have any further questions. Good luck, Melissa
