Areca Palm-thin black lines on stems and canes

Question
My areca palm has recently been accumulating pin-thin short black lines on the stems and it's canes. what is this? Also, a few of the fronds on the lower most level of growth have yellow spots and the tips are browning, what is the cause of this?

Answer
Dear Natalie,

The very thin lines are a normal part of the Areca frond structure. It is not a cause for concern.

It is also common for lower fronds to yellow and die back as new fronds are added up above. As long as it is limited to the lower fronds and you are not losing more than you are gaining in new ones, then it requires no remedial action other than cutting them off.

Make sure your Areca gets lots of very bright indirect light and a few hours of direct sun. Water it thoroughly when the top half-inch soil is dry.
