cut yukka stems???

Question
hi,

i work at a florist and we have made some gorgeous vase arrangement with
cut yukka tops, rock and water. We have been told a few different things
about the water level if any at all!!! Should we have no water, just a little bit,
or covering the stems! we were told that they live for up to six months with
NO water,  and another told us we needed water??? just a little confused!!!
Dont want our stick to go moldy or die!!!
PLEASE HELP!!!!!! thanks !!

Answer
Kate,

Yucca are desert plants so I would not put water in the vases constantly. If I were doing no water I would seal the lower ends of the stalks with warm parafin so they do not dry out too much. Without that I would put just enough water in to reach the ends of the stalks once every 2 weeks and if it isn't soaked up in 24 hours I would either dump it if possible or suction it out with a turkey baster or mabey insert a paper towel to absord it and the pull it out with long tweezers. You want just enough to keep it from whithering and not so much it turns mushy and molds. It will mold before it rots so if you see mold keep it dry longer. You can spray it with Lysol to kill mold. Good luck.
