Fruit on a Christmas Cactus

Question
Hello,

I have enjoyed my Christmas Cactus plants for many years, one of which came from my mother and is about 20 years old.  I have about 15 pots of the plants in various colors.  This summer, however, I found that two have produced a pink fruit-like growth on them.  The "fruits" are pink and somewhat ball shaped.  I've never heard of or seen these before.  Can you tell me more?

Thanks.

Sue

Answer
Susanne,

You had the plants hanging outside and the flowers wer polinated by insects. The "fruit" you are seeing are seed pods. I would not attempt to eat one. It is a rare occurance but I did find on the internet where it has happened several times so it is not unheard of. You might try planting the seeds and see if you can grow some new varieties of  Christmas Cactus from the seeds. They will not come out exactly like the [arent but more like a new hybrid variety of the combined mother and father. Good luck.

Darlene.
