About Giant Dumbcane

Question

Giant Dumbcane
I need to know about this plant Giant Dumbcane.
I have it in my office for 11 years, and never seen a flower blooming from it, but this past weeks I noticed that there are 3 flowers blooming, do these plants have flowers? and how often do they bloom?

Answer
Hi Ampy,
Sorry it has taken me so long to answer your question. I had a unexpected computer problem and was unable to access the Internet.

It is unusual for Dieffenbachia to produce their spathe like flowers but sometimes when the conditions are just right they will produce flower like pods. The flowers are not very attractive nor do they smell very good (I have had people complain that the 'stench' from the flowers filled their whole house). It is best to remove the flowers as soon as you notice them. Flowers take up a lot of a plant's energy, when you remove them then that energy is redirected to producing the beautiful leaves that dieffenbachia is known for. I have also heard that a dieffenbachia will deteriorate and possibly die after fully blooming. I personally have never had this happen but I have had many people say that their dieffenbachia have died after they have left the flowers on the plant and allowed the plant to fully bloom. Perhaps their dieffenbachia used up so much energy producing the flowers that they were left in a weakened state.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
     Thanks
       Tracy
