Yucca Palm Trouble

Question
I have had my Yucca Palm for approximately two and a half years and when I purchased it I lived in Austin, TX. It stands roughly at 3 feet tall if you include the size of the leaf blades.  When I had the plant in Austin I did little if any maintenance to the plant.  I watered it every two weeks and had it near a window in the kitchen of my apartment where it got indirect sunlight.  I moved a year ago to El Paso, TX where we have dry heat, not humid weather like in Austin, and my plant does not seem to be thriving as it was in Austin.  The leaf blades are now limp instead of sharp and pointy, and although I have it near a window like in Austin it still does not want to grow the same.  Recently I added a fertilizer that was seafood based and gave the soil plenty of water.  Roughly a week later my plant looks overwatered and more and more leaves are dying.  Please help me revive this beautiful plant and stop more leaves from falling off.  I have not watered it since I added the fertilizer but I did try placing the plant outside where it got more sunlight.  Nothing is working.

Regards,

Crystle

Answer
Crystle,

A yucca is a desert plant. It likes dry air and it likes sunshine, not indirect light. Move it to a window where the sun will actually shine on it. NEVER water it until it is bone dry. In the summer outside in a shady location so it will not get sunburned, you should only water it once a week. Indoors in the summer it should only be watered every 10-14 days. In the the winter it should only be watered every 3 weeks. Do not fertilize it again until you see signs of new growth. With no signs of growth you will burn the fine roots that are trying to regrow.

It loves the sun and hates being too wet. Solve those problems and it may recover. Good luck.
