dieffenbachia---left in cold car

Question
Dieffenbachia from my mother's funeral. On the way home my son had car trouble.  Plant was left in car overnight last week.  Temps probably in the low 20's.  Now, some of the leaves have black areas/streaks on them. 1) will it repair itself? 2) can I save the plant?  I sure appreciate your insight!

Answer
Davis,

If the leaves only have black spots and the entire plant has not collapsed you are very lucky! Just be patient and put it near a sunny window but not in direct sun. Water it normally and be sure to let it dry out between waterings. Do not allow water to sit in the drain tray, empty it an hour after watering it and do not water it again until the soil has felt dry for a few days and the plant feels light weight. Too much water kills more plants than too little does. As it starts growing out more you can trim off the damaged leaves. Fertilize it once a month with a water soluable fertilizer such as Miracle Grow or one of the generic equivalants. #1 just be patient! Good luck!
