Peace Lily Infestation

Question
I have a Peace Lily that i just repotted and after repotting noticed that the leaves and "flowers" were turning brown.  So I looked even harder at it and noticed little white worms which I am found out to be baby grubs.  I was wondering how I could get rid of this infestation without killing my beautiful peace lily!!

Answer
Terri,

When you repot you should only move your plant to a pot that has a diameter 2 inches larger than the diameter of the old pot. If you moved it to one a lot larger then repot it immediately to a pot that is the right size. When you move it to too large a pot it never dries out because there is more soil than the plant can dry out. If it doesn't dry out the roots begin to rot and the smell of the rotting roots attracts the grubs you are seeing. They are feeding off the rotting roots. Peace lilies need to dry out well between waterings. If you start making sure it dries out before you water the grubs will not come back after you get rid of them. To get rid of them immediately you need to remove the drain tray and set the plant in the sink for 3 hours to drain away as much water as possible. Then replace the drain tray and water the plant immediately with rubbing alcohol. Put enough alcohol on the plant so some runs into the drain tray under the pot and leave it sit for at least 4 hours. Rubbing alcohol will kill any worms or insects on contact. After the 4 hours again remove the drain tray and set it in the sink for 8-12 hours to dry out as much as possible. After that, again make sure that the plant is very dry and lighter weight before you water again. Peace lilies must dry out. Good luck!
