New Plant....No Green Thumb.....

Question
Hi Will!

I was just given a beautiful small plant with green & purple leaves. Based on the photos I've seen on line it is a Strobilanthes Dyerianus. I do not have a green thumb....can you help me, in the simplest description possible, how to take care of it?

Thanks!

Stephanie

Answer
Hi Stephanie,

This is not the plant I would choose as a gift got a novice, but that does not mean it is terribly difficult; it just requires diligence. It is commonly called Persian Shield.

Leave it in its existing pot. If you don't like the looks of the existing pot, then set that pot inside of a slightly larger, more attractive pot. But don't mess with the soil or roots.

Keep it right on a sunny windowsill indoors. In weak light, it will lose its pretty coloration.

As soon as the surface of the soil feels dry to the touch, slowly pour water over the entire surface until a small amount trickles through the drainage holes in the bottom. Water again only when the soil surface is dry again. You will need to monitor the soil moisture daily until you determine how long it goes between thorough waterings. This is not a plant that forgives watering lapses very well. If the soil gets too dry, the leaves will wilt and that tells you that you waited too long to water. If you keep the soil constantly wet, then the roots will rot and the plant will slowly die.

You can apply a fertilizer or plant food once per month at half-strength dilution recommended on the label.

It enjoys increased humidity, especially in winter when indoor air is very dry. Use a humidifier or a pebble tray. Misting the leaves is a waste of time.

In winter, the Persian Shield often goes semi-dormant, meaning that it uses less water and you should allow the soil to dry a bit deeper in between waterings.

In sum, the keys to success are to provide good light and to monitor the soil moisture carefully.

Good luck and please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
