Re-planting Dracaena Spikes-Cordyline Indivisa

Question
I have several Dracaena Spikes in flower pots outside. I use the Dracaena against the very back of my large flower pots for height.  My plants are healthy and have grown to 22-32 inches tall.  Because I live in Arizona and it is getting hot I would like to replant these plants and move them indoors.  How large should the pot I replant them in be?  Do I need to do anything special to make the transition.  Because of the heat in Arizona I cannot move these plants into the garage. I would appreciate any other tips and advise you can give me on successful replanting.

Answer
Hi Deborah,

Removing a plant from a pot and separating its roots from the entwined roots of other plants is always risky. Like surgery, if it is not done properly, you will lose the patient.

Try to separate the roots with as little trauma as possible. Usually this means using a long sharp knife to slice down through the rootball between the plants. This will sever some of the roots, but leave most of the roots intact.

Repot the divisions into pots that are just barely large enough to accommodate the divided rootballs. The goal is to add as little fresh soil as possible. Water thoroughly after repotting.

When you move your plants indoors, the light level will be greatly reduced and that means plant growth will also slow considerably. Slower growth means less water and fertilizer. Provide the maximum light possible when indoors.
