money tree plant

Question
I have a money tree plant for 2 months, looks good and has new growth. Recently I have noticed little tiny flying bugs around it. What are they and what do I use to kill them without harming the plant? Thanks!!

Answer
Donna,

If they are flying around the soil and the base of the plant they are fungus gnats and you are watering too much. It doesn't want to be constantly wet. The roots are rotting and attracting the fungus gnats. It needs to dry out between waterings so the roots can breathe for a couple of days and they will stop rotting and regrow. Never allow water in the drain tray. Empty it an hour after watering, every time.

If they are flying around the top of the plant they are white fly.  Take it outside and use a hose to spray the top well and that will literally wash them off. Then you need to increase the humidity around the plant. Try running your air conditioner less. Put 2 drain trays under the plant. The one closest to the plant then another larger one under the regular one and fill that one with water so it will evaporate around the plant and humidify the air. Or set the plant outside in a shady area so it will not sunburn and the whitefly's natural enemies will take care of them. The plant will also get more humidity outside in Illinois. Good look.
