sick yucca elephantipes

Question
the full plant
the full plant
Hi,
I bought a yucca about three months back. Its this plant.
http://www.ikea.com/fi/fi/catalog/products/66804071/

Seems I over watered it. It has lost most of its leaves and only a few green ones remain that sprouted only a few weeks back but now even some of these seem to be withering. When the new shoots sprouted I was relieved that perhaps the plant is recovering. Today I noticed that the stem actually is oozing a blackish sticky stuff.
Since this plant is in my living room I think it may cause health issues and I should get rid of it. But I absolutely hate to throw it away while it still has some life in it.

Is there something I can do to save at least the living parts of it ? Will it help if I cut off these small stems parts that have green leaves and plant it in fresh soil in another pot ?
If so, can you please guide how to do it.

Answer
Hi Aly,

I try really hard to find solutions for people so they can save their plants. However, in this case your Yucca is far beyond recovery. There is no root system left, probably due to too much water and too little light. Once the roots are gone, there is no way for the plant to recover.

You can try cutting off short stem sections with a few green leaves and rooting them in plain water. However, even that is an act of desperation and unlikely to produce good results.

I have written an article on Yucca care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who sends a request to me at [email protected]. It may prove useful if you decide to purchase another Yucca cane.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
