podocarpus macrophylla

Question
Hi I have been given a small bonsai podocarpus macrophylla and it has looked really healthy....but it has developed brown scab like things on the underside of some of the leaves.
The thing is it seems to go across the leaf entirely and ends up looking as if I have been trimming the leaves. Also I don't know if this is relevant but I have also noticed that some exposed roots have got tiny brownish lumps?
Can you help identify ?
Thanks
Linda

Answer
Hi Linda,

I really need a photo posted here or emailed to me at [email protected] to be able to understand what you are describing.

Slightly raised brown bumps about the size of a match head are usually scale insects. They are often accompanied by stickiness on the leaves and the table below. If this is what you have, then spray the entire plant - all leaf and stem surfaces - until it is dripping wet with a solution of 5 parts water, 1 part isopropyl alcohol and a squirt of liquid soap.

I don't understand what you mean by its looking like you have trimmed the leaves.

Exposed root surfaces are normal with bonsai. Tiny brown bumps are probably normal, but I need a good photo to be able to tell for sure.

I have written articles on plant pests and bonsai that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who emails a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
