AV leaves start out green then turn yellow

Question
AV with yellow leaves
AV with yellow leaves
my AV is growing well but does not flower and the new green leaves turn yellow.  I don't think I overwater it and it sits in a room with SE exposure with lots of windows.  I don't know what else to do.

Answer
Hi Thomas,

Your AV is in a pot that is too large. When AV's are kept in their original small plastic pots they are easy to care for and hard to over water. When they are moved to a larger pot with added soil, that added soil acts like a sponge and absorbs and retains water for a long time. That is what causes  root rot.

I suggest you undo the repotting and hopefully you will find the original rootball after you remove the excess soil you added. After removing the soil you added, move the original rootball back into the same sized pot it was originally in. This down-sizing will allow the soil to dry out within a week or less and allow the roots to start to recover. In the interim, remove all of the discolored leaves as they will not recover.

Protect your AV from any direct sunlight coming through the nearby windows by moving it just beyond the reach of the direct rays of the sun.

Fertilizer, increased humidity and other commonly recommended solutions will not help.

I have written an article on repotting that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who emails a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
