Gardenia bonsai

Question
Hi, I was given a gardenia bonsai in Jan.  It has lots of new growth on it . . . No blooms yet. I am concerned about having to water it often and that I may forget about it. Can I convert it to a regular gardenia bush by transplanting it into a regular pot?

Answer
Hi Sonia,

If your Gardenia is a true bonsai, then it has been trained for many years to be miniaturized and grow in a shallow tray. Theoretically, you can transfer it to a slightly deeper planter, but it may well go into shock unless you have had experience with repotting and bonsai. You cannot suddenly move it to a much larger pot or you risk root rot.

I think a better solution is to find a way to remember to water it regularly or give it to someone who will be able to manage it.

I have written articles on Gardenias and bonsai care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who emails a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
