Dolphin Plant

Question
I purchased a Dolphin plant this early spring. It is sitting on my front porch facing east. We do have an overhang on the porch.

So far I am disappointed....not seeing any new blooms...there were some but now it is at a stand still....  yes, I have fertilized it with miracle gro....any ideas on how to boost the flower power??

Answer
Pam,

Switch to Miracle-Gro?Water Soluble Bloom Booster?Flower Food. It will have higher phosphorous, the middle # of the 3 numbers on all fertilizers. All fertilizers have 3 numbers somewhere on the label, like 20-20-20 or 10-20-10.  If your are using a fertilizer with a higher 1st number you are growing the leaves and greenparts of the plant. The middle number grows the flowers and the last number grows the roots. If you want blooms you need fertilizer with a higher middle number.

Your dolphin plant needs bright sun and it will also help the plant bloom more if you give it a dose of epsom salts. Epsom Salts is magnesium sulfate and plants need magnesium to bloom. The dose should be 1 heaping teaspoon for each 4 inches of pot diameter. For a 10 inch hanging basker it will need 2 1/2 heaping teaspoons of epsom salts sprinkled on top of the soil then watered in. Using blooming plant fertilizer and a dose of epsom salts you should see blooms within 3-6 months. Water it only when it is dry. Keeping it too wet will discourage blooming. It generally only blooms once a year like most plants but it can bloom for several months. If this cycle blooming time is still going on you could have blooms within a month. Good luck!
