monkey-tail or rat-tail cactus

Question
I was given a 'monkey-tail' plant, but it doesn't look like any of the pictures. I have had it for about two years, it has never bloomed. It is in an east window. The stems are very long, they look like a regular cactus, but are very soft. Maybe it is not a monkey tail or rat tail? How do I get it to bloom? It seems very healthy otherwise.

Answer
Hi Mary,

Thanks for emailing me the photo. Your plant is commonly called Rattail Cactus. Its botanical name is Aporocactus flagelliformis, in case you want to impress your neighbors!

Although this plant is capable of flowering profusely, it is not easy to do as an indoor plant. First, it must be right in a very sunny window where it can get at least 4 hours of direct sun each day. Second, it requires cool temperatures in the fall in order to set buds. Specifically, it need temps in the 55-60 degree F. range from late fall until buds start to form, usually in January. It is also important to cut back on your watering during this semi-dormant period.

Most people cannot manage these temps in their homes so that is why it is hard to get Rattail Cacti to flower.

During the rest of the year warmer temps and more frequent waterings are fine.

Hi Mary,

I cannot reliably help you without knowing exactly what plant species you have. Please post a good photo that shows the entire plant, including its pot, here or email it to me at [email protected].

After I have ID'd it for you, I will be better able to help you care for it properly.
