fica tree

Question
I have had this tree for many years and it has grown and thrived until a few weeks ago when it started building up salt on top of
the rocks that I had on top of the soil and the leaves started turning brown and falling off.  What is the best way to treat this?  Thank you

Answer
Hi Tudy,

It is not clear from your report just what this "salt" on top of the stones is. However, I suspect it may be the dried residue from a scale insect infestation, called honeydew. This honeydew is a secretion by the scale insects and is quite sticky. As it dries, it becomes hard, dry crystals that might be mistaken for salt. If you have noticed any stickiness on the Ficus leaves or on the rim of the pot or on the floor under the tree, then you can sure it is honeydew and your tree has a scale insect infestation.

Treat the scale by mixing a solution of 5 parts water, 1 part isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and a squirt of liquid dish soap. The key to success is to thoroughly drench every leaf and stem surface until they are dripping wet. Yes, this is a big messy job that is best done outdoors. However, thoroughness of coverage is the key to eradicating all of the scale insects. If you miss some, they will reproduce and the infestation will be back in a couple of months. Toxic pesticides are no more effective if they are not applied equally thoroughly.

I have written articles on treating indoor plant pests and on Ficus tree care that I will email for free to you (or anyone else) who emails a request to me at [email protected].

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
