Cape angels

Question
My plant looks great except that it hasn't had  flowers on it lately I seem to have some long stems that do not have any leaves don't know if I should cut them off or noT

Answer
Hi Denise,

Plectranthus 'cape angel' is not a good indoor house plant. It requires lots of direct sunlight indoors with cool winter temps above freezing. Another problem overall with this plant is that it is a hybrid that tends to bloom beautifully once at point-of-sale and only sporadically thereafter. Even outdoors in warm climates it often does not re-bloom.

I am not sure what the long stem is that you referred to. If it is a leaf stem and has no leaves, then it is probably not getting enough light and may be over watered. If it is a flower spike, then leave it alone and hope that it produces some flowers for you.

Do your best by keeping it potbound, located on a sunny windowsill and watered as soon as the top half-inch of soil feels dry. Try to find a cool windowsill for it in winter and reduce watering at that time. Prune it back hard as spring arrives in order to encourage blooms. If it doesn't bloom, don't blame yourself because it is probably a genetic problem.

Please let me know if any of this is unclear or if you have any additional questions.
