HERB

Question
WE ARE LOOKING FOR AN HERB THAT YOU CANNOT EAT PEOPLE USED TO DRY IT AND PUT IT IN THE KITCHEN AROUND FOOD. BUGS DO NOT LIKE IT. IN THE GARDEN IT STAYS GREEN YEAR ROUND. IT IS A GREEN COLOR LIKE AN EVERGREEN

Answer
Dear Mary,

You may be looking for cedar (cedrus deodara), which is an evergreen and inedible. Unfortunately it doesn't like colder climes and seems to survive winters only in Mediterranean-type climates. I garden in zone 7, and it will not survive here.
Wintergreen (gaulteria fragrantissima) is another possibility - definitely NOT edible.

If I might suggest something a bit safer (especially if there are small children around): lavender, sage and thyme (in that order) are things that insects do not like. They all dry very easily just tied in a small bunch and hung upside down. The drying takes all of 2 weeks, even inside a moderately humid home. Their bonus over wintergreen: humans like their scents! Personally, the scent of wintergreen also makes me nauseous. :)

Nothing else comes to mind at the moment, but if you would care to describe the plant you are looking for (shape, size, colour of leaves, any fruit it bears, how big the plant gets), I'd be happy to try further.

Regards,

Tara Kneitz
