italian cypress (stricta & glauca)

Question
I live in east meadow NY, I planning to plant both type of Italian cypress around my house. nobody seems to sell them around here, I wonder if they can grow in my area, thank you in advance.

Answer
Italian Cypress are supposed to be hardy only to zone 7, so probably wont work in your zone 6 garden. The cold weather will kill them--it grow best South of zone 7. You might want to try Juniperus scopulorum 'Sky Rocket' which has a similar form and is hardy to Zone 3-7. Columnar Hetzii Juniper - Juniperus chinensis 'Hetzii Columnaris' (15-20 feet)or Juniperus chinensis 'Torulosa'-Hollywood Juniper(10-15 feet) could also serve as nice substitutes for the Italian Cypress. The 'Hetzii' is hardy to zone 4 and the 'Torulosa' to zone 3.

Ask your local tree nursery--and give them what you would like in landscaping ideas. They should be able to help.
