2 Questions about VFT

Question
I live in Southern Germany, I have a couple of questions
1) I planted my VFT's seeds at the end of January, have them on a sunny windowsill. After some days, mould appeared on the surface. I sprayed thoroughly with a sulfur funguicide which, due to my dismal mathematical skills, was more concentrated than it should have been. Less than a week later, the mould was back. I sprayed again. The mould came back. Repeat. My bet is the seeds are already dead either from the mould or the sulphur, but how can that happen? Isn't the funguicide supposed to kill the mould? The lil' pots reek of sulfur and they're mouldy!
2) Can I repot the motherplant yet?

Answer
Hi Nuri,

There may be several reasons why your seeds haven't sprouted.  Mold is certainly one possibility.  Another possibility is low temperatures.  Given that the mold keeps coming back is an indication that the temperature may be too cool.  For proper germination, the temperature needs to be about 24-30癈.

This is the first I have heard of repeated spraying of a concentrated solution of sulfur that did not get rid of the mold.  You may need to switch to another product, such as Neem oil.  This is a naturally derived product that kills mold almost immediately, but it is safe to use with carnivorous plants.

If you have more seeds, try germinating the seeds again, but this time place a clear plastic cup over the seeds to keep mold spores out.  You will need to keep the pot under fluorescent lights rather than sunlight, unless you risk baking the seeds.  Once you see germination, remove the cup and acclimate your seedlings to lower humidity.  At that point, also spray the surface with Neem oil or sulfur.

Since it is early in the growing season, now is a good time to repot your adult flytraps.  Use a mix of 1 part peat moss and 1 part perlite.  For more information about growing flytraps, read our care sheets online:
