Rinsing Peat & Perlite

Question
Hello! I love your website! It's full of great info and lots of great plants! I have a Cupped Flytrap and a red Cape Sundew with an Australian Pitcher plant on the way. I've read that some people rinse their peat moss and perlite before creating their potting mix, do you guys do this also? Thanks so much for the great plants, my kids and I are extremely happy! Have a great day!

Answer
Hi Ron,

Rinsing peat moss and perlite?  Oh, dear!  That seems like a waste of effort.  There's absolutely no reason to rinse these ingredients.  I'm not even sure what the other growers are trying to rinse away.

I know that some brands will add fertilizer to their peat moss and perlite, but rinsing doesn't get rid of the fertilizer.  In most cases, the manufacturers add time-release fertilizers.  Just make sure that the peat moss and perlite doesn't contain any fertilizers and you'll be fine.

Good growing!
Jacob Farin.
