dying sundew

Question
sundew
sundew
i bought my sundew may 4 it is a D. anglica - Mikinalo "Kanaele". I have it in a sunny south window and even have a grow lamp during the day.  It is in distilled water but the leaves have been turning black and dying off, the others have no dew on them at all.  I cannot seem to keep it alive.  Please help.

Answer
Thank you for uploading the photograph.  This helps me out a lot.  From what I can tell, your plant actually went dormant!  It formed a resting bud called a hibernaculum.  This plant is a tropical version of the temperate Drosera anglica that is found in the continental United States.  They typically form a hibernaculum in winter, but I suppose it's possible for the tropical variety to form them in summer as a way to make it through dry spells.  The funny thing is that we've never witnessed them do this in our collection.  I suppose our summers are mild enough that this type of dormancy is never triggered.  The sudden transition to your climate may have triggered it to go dormant.

So don't throw away your plant.  Keep it in an east window where it can receive morning sunlight.  Shelter it from the hot afternoon sun.  In a couple months or so, the plant should emerge from dormancy.  In the meantime, I've also credited you the price of the plant in the form of plant points.

Good growing!
