Algea Problem

Question
The water in my trays for my plants gets a lot of algae in it.  A while ago you recommended Consan 20, but it makes the water smell bad.  Is there something else I can put into the water to keep it down without harming the plants?

Answer
You may need to reread the previous response more carefully.  We don't at all recommend adding Consan 20 to the water.  Instead, you use it to clean the tray to kill any algae remnants.  Keep in mind that what kills algae will also kill plants, so you should never add it to the water tray while your plants are still in it.

You can add barley straw to your water trays.  The straw releases compounds that interfere with algae growth.  (This is a different process than actually killing the algae, which is what Consan 20 does.)  You can find barley straw online for sale.  Start with a clean tray, and add a small amount of barley straw to the water.  That's it!

Good growing!
