Repotting old Aloe Vera

Question
We have an Aloe Vera that I bought my son years ago. At the time it was in a little 3" pot. It has grown tremendously and we have repotted it several times. While still healthy and propigating like mad it needs to have something done with it again. Since the lower "leaves" die off and leave a bare stem ours now has a stem about 2 feet long. Of course it just hangs over the side of the pot and creeps along the table. Can you cut the top part of the Aloe from the stem and then repot that? If the answer is no, is there anything I can do to make this plant attractive again?

Answer
Dear Marylou,

You can cut it off and replant, but try this. Take another pot of equal size and fill it with soil. Place it next to the existing pot and allow the Aloe's stem to touch the soil or bury it slightly in the soil in the 2nd pot. Over time it should produce roots from the stem into the 2nd pot. Once it does, you can cut the stem at that point.

You will want to repot it at that time to make sure it will sit up straight. Hopefully I explained that clearly. Good luck!

Sincerely,

Greg
