yellowed cactus

Question
Hi Greg
I have a cactus that's turning yellow.  I tried adding nitrogen, but that hasn't happened. And cuttings from the same plant are having the same problem, despite being in fresh potting soil. I'm torn between thinking they're either getting too much sun or too much water.  Help?

Ianthe

Answer
Dear Lanthe,

Cactus can yellow from lack of nitrogen or too much heat/sun. If it is outside and getting over heated (which is very easy in a pot), move it to a shady spot. Some cactus also have a varigated growth that is usually yellow & green mixed.

If the plant is going soft, it may be from too much water, which would indicate rot. Hopefully that is not the case. The best thing I have found to get cactus (and plant in general back in shape is a product called "Superthrive". It is available at most nurseries. Just follow the directions. Hope this helps,

Sincerely,

Greg
