Cactus care - winter

Question
Thanks Greg - as per grow lights - I have heard that the new flourescents that fit into a regular light bulb socket put out good lights for plants - any experience with those?

-----Question-----
Greg, I recently came into a large (for me) collection of succuletns - cactus, euphorbia, crassula, howarthia, ect. I live in the washington DC area and had just put them down in the basement - hoping to overwinter them there.  tho I have the plants under artifical light for about 10hrs - The gas furnace is down there as well.

Questions:

1. What is the proper length of "daylight" I should give these guys. should it reflect winters hours, or am I safe with longer?
2.  the temp sometimes reaches 80 degrees or so down there - a problem for winter? are they expecting to get rest and cooler weather?
-----Answer-----
Dear Ford,

10 to 12 hours per day is best and I would use "grow lights" which are available at most nurseries. Cut back on watering (make sure the soil dries out completely between waterings) and don't let the temperature fall below 40 degrees or so. Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Greg

Answer
Dear Ford,

I do, but I haven't seen "grow lights" in that configuration, although they may be available. If you can find them, they should work fine. I did some checking and a hydroponics store may carry what you are looking for.

Sincerely,

Greg
