saguaru seedlings

Question
Greg: I have a seeding saguaro packet purchased in Phoenix. Within 10 days virtually all of the seedlings sprouted in the 2cm diameter clay pot provided. I placed the pot in a larger container that I would normally use for a phalenopsis orchid--plastic 4cm diameter with small slits on the side. I add 1 inch of water outside the base of that container and allow it to proceed to dryness so that all moisture is being assimilated slowly up through the surrounding soil and then into the small ceramic pot. The sprouts are green and looking healthy  but extreemly crowded. They are 1/4 inch tall. Will they easily separate after one year? What size pot should I transplant into? I have no real need for 30 plants so ultimate survival is more important than recovering every single sprout.

Answer
Jerry,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I have been having a lot of computer issues that I think are now fixed. They should separate easily in a year or so. I would plant 2 or 3 to a pot (a 3 inch pot would work great). Make sure to use a "cactus mix" type of soil and put a layer of pea gravel on top of the soil to keep the seedlings standing up. Good luck!

Sincerely,

Greg
