using garlic to deter rabbits from imatiens

Question
Please forgive my ignorance...in using garlic, do I plant segments or sprinkle then at base of plant or do something else with it?

Answer
The chemical in garlic oil that tastes so good to Homo sapiens is what repels Rabbits from the vegetable patch and the flower bed.  Bear that in mind when you contemplate where to put this for best effect, and how.

A garlic press will really open up a garlic clove.  So that gets my vote.  Others insist you might be able to address this problem with a vial of garlic oil, or some other method.  The biggest downside to the garlic oil solution is that it has to be repeated every time it rains, through the Summer, into Fall and then again next Spring.  Liquid Fence is another option:

I would try the garlic cloves first -- but make sure these are smashed up so that the garlic oil is released.  See how that works.
