Black mold on holly bushes

Question
I am from Louisville, Ky and was trimming holly bushes with the black mold on them. About 1 day later i am feeling kinda sick and my muscles are a little tight and also i have an out of body type feeling. Almost like flu symptoms. I also did puke. Can the black mold do this to me?

Answer
Dear Garrett, It is indeed possible to get sick from the mold on the holly bushes.  Even though most of my life I have worked outdoors, I still occasionally get the symptoms you describe in certain areas.  A few notable times I was in bed for a few days afterward.  Since you have found out what makes you sick, I would only approach the hollies wearing a mask to prevent more symptoms.  Now let me tell you what to do about the mold so you won't be affected any more.  The mold is caused by scale or other insects that leave a residue. Spray the holly with a lightweight horticultural oil (SunSpray is the best) on a sunny day, and within a few hours the black soot will start to flake off.  You may have to spray two or three times but it will come off and you won't be affected by the soot any more.  However, while spraying and while the soot is flaking off, be sure to wear one of those masks to prevent any further symptoms.  You have my sympathies.  The first time it happened to me I was sick for days and it is truly a miserable feeling.  Good luck, Melissa
