spikey week growing out of my Meyer lemon stree

Question
Hi

I have a similar problem with my lemon tree dropping its flower and growing almost no fruit. But a new problem developed this summer. It appears that some sort of weed is growing out of the tree like branches. The stems are green, the leaves similar to the Meyer tree but they have very sharp long spikey needles on the stems. At first I thought it was the branches of the tree because the leaves have the same shape.

Any idea what's going on?

Thanks,

robert

Answer
Hi Robert, you have to cut the branches below the graft, which are the ones with the big spikey needles as it will kill your meyer lemon.  The graft is the part coming out of the ground usually 6 inches to one foot above the soil line.  Anything on the graft needs to be removed and that will let your tree grow again.  kathy
