Coral Bark Maple Disease

Question
Coral Bark Trunk
Coral Bark Trunk
Hi I've got a Coral Bark maple with a black, sapping spot on the  truck at the base and one side of the tree's leaves are turning modeled or pink. See photos.  What is this and what can be done.  This is quite a specimen so I don't want to lose it!!

Thanks,
Marlene

Answer
Hi Marlene,

I think that the problem with the maple is graft incompatibility.  This type of maple is grafted onto the roots of another tree.

There are several reasons for graft incompatibility. The root portion is called the stock (rootstock) and the grafted top portion is called the scion.  Sometimes incompatibility occurs when the stock grows at a faster rate than the scion or vise versa.  Based on your images and description, I think this is the most likely reason for the problem.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for this problem.  It indicates that the two pieces did not grow equally and the cellular structure inside is no longer properly lined up so nutrient and water movement is impaired.  You will have to wait and see how the problem develops over the next few weeks.  Continue to care for the tree as normal with your watering regimen.

Good luck!
