plants underneath carrotwood tree

Question
I have tried growing various annuals and perennials under my large carrotwood tree on the east side of my home (in Sarasota FL), but so far nothing has survived. I have been told by landscapers that this tree tends to rob other nearby plants of nutrients, but I would like to find something to grow in the brick-constructed ring around the base of this tree (about 34 feet in circumference). A local nurseryman recommended flax lily as a hardy and nice-looking plant, so I am giving that a try (planted one just today). While I recognize that the carrotwood is regarded as an invasive species, it is the only shade tree we have left in our yard after disease and wind storms destroyed other trees in recent years, so I do not want to remove it. I will appreciate your suggestions on the types of plants that might grow and flourish in the tree ring under the carrotwood. Thanks, T. Roberts

Answer
Hi Tod,  The problem is the Carrotwoood Tree is a water sucking beast that robs your whole yard of water.  So, you do not mention if you water under this tree or are looking for something that would live with very little water.  Bromeliads take very little water as they collect from the top of their plant. You could grow a vine on the ground and plant it where you can water it and lead it under the tree so it can spread.  Signoniums could possible work as they require little care and can take shade.  I am in Sarasota,www.crowleynursery.net, and at the down town Farmers Market, it any of this interests you.  At the nursery I have signoniums planted under trees and they work fine.  kathy
