ants on trees


Question
Dear Jim Hyland.
Do you have any idea why ants go up and down
orange trees at this time of the year.I live in Malta which is in europe.
   I look forward for your answer.

Answer
Ants normally are harvesters. In this case they are more then likely harvesting the sugar that is produced by an insect called Aphids. The aphids suck the sap out of the trees leaves and produce a substance called honeydew which is mostly a sugar base. The ants in turn collect the honeydew and feed it to their young and queen. The ants are not damaging the tree.
