Georgia Tree bark problem

Question
I have 2 trees in my front yard. the smaller ones limbs are completely covered in what appears to be seperate pcs of wood, flat, about 1.50 inches wide.  I'd like to send you a photo if you would tell me how. It is also making big headway from the bottom moving up on the bigger one. About 3/4's of the way up.  Please instruct.
Thank you

Answer
You can send the pictures to [email protected] and I will see if I can ID the problem. In the subject line put "allexpert question"
Thanks

Thanks for the pictures.

What you have is a species that has corky twigs. There are several that fit this description--sweetgum, winged elm and bur oak etc. I can not tell from the pictures which tree this is. BUT the corky bark is normal and is not a disease and will not harm the tree. If I were to guess I would guess sweetgum being your tree. If you want to know exactly which tree species you have --wait until the tree leafs out this spring and call the local office of the Ga. Forestry Commission and ask one of their Foresters to come take a look. This is a free service.
Here is a link to their contact web page and you can click on the county you live in and get the contact information,  http://www.gfc.state.ga.us/ContactUs.cfm

In any case you do not have to worry about if this tree will die from this it will not. It is part of the make up of the species.
