Bradford Pear in Fort Worth, TX

Question
Hello.  We have a 6 year old Bradford Pear tree that has always done well up to now.  This year it bloomed normally, but as the blooms faded and the leaves began to show, they have brown spots and are curling.  Leaf production is below normal as well.  Please advise.  Thanks in advance.

Roy

Answer
Sounds like some kind of environmental problem since any disease or insect would not show up this soon on the tree. I do not know what the weather has been there but her are a couple of thing that could have caused this leaf curl.

Too much water--heavy rains causing flooding of the soil around the tree.
The use of a fertilizer with a herbicide mixture on the lawn near the trees--some are called Weed and Feed/ The herbicide contained in the fertilizer mixture will kill trees.

Some type of root damage caused by changing the soil around or near the tree.

These are things to look for and without seeing the tree it will be hard to come up with any clear cut ID of the problem. I would call the local office of the Texas Forest Service and ask if one of their Foresters could come take a look. If they are available they should be able to do this--there are wildfires in the Western part of Texas so they maybe tied up with them but they should be able to help over the phone.

here is the web link to their contact information.
