Yucca trunk is weeping a liquid

Question
QUESTION: Please can you tell me why and what I should do with an indoor yucca which has started to leak a liquid from two thirds down its trunk.  Many thanks

ANSWER: The weeping fluid is the sap of the plant coming out of the trunk.  The why is harder to determine.  It could be from an injury or maybe and insect made a hole in the trunk.  Smell of the liquid.  If it smells sort of like liquor, then it may be a bacterial infection.  There is not much that can be done with this type of problem because it is inside the plant.  Keep it watered and fertilized well and observe over the next couple of weeks and respond back with any observations of getting better or worse.  Also look closely at the area to make sure there is no wound or insect in that area.  Please let me know.  Thanks.

QUESTION: yeah it does smell a bit and it seems to have srunken under the bark only around that bit, but is fine further up the trunk.  Is there anything I can do to get rid of the infection, would it help to stop watering or as you said keep it well watered and fertilised and might it go away?

Is there anything that may have caused it so I can prevent it happened again?

Answer
The yucca is an arid climate plant and requires little water.  If you have been watering the plant, stop for a while until the soil is almost totally dry before watering again.  You may try purchasing some Daconil fungicide at a garden center and mixing up a 2% solution to pour around the plant.  If it is a fungus, the fungicide will help the plant recover.  It sounds by your description that the plant has been overwatered and has a root and crown rot developing, which you may be able to arrest the problem with the two above methods.  I hope this helps.  Good Luck.
