leaf loss and discolorization on bradford pear trees

Question
I have 2 18 year old Bradford Pear trees one of which is surrounded by concrete driveways, the second is close to the concrete driveway.  Both are experiencing the same symptoms.  For the past 5 years in July the leaves on the trees have gotten black spots on them and have fallen off the trees.  Some of the leaves have turned yellow as well.  Since the root system goes under concrete, I have diligently watered the roots with soaker hoses, to no avail.  I have had them trimmed twice in the last 5 years to keep the branches off the house.  This year I had them sprayed with "menace" and the trees look worse then ever.  Now I am having massive loss of leaves some of which have the black spots, some are yellow with black spots and some are completely brown.  The trunk also in the last 5 years looks like it has stretch marks on it.  I have a lot of empty branches.  We have had an unseasonably cooler and wetter summer for Missouri, so I can't blame the heat or lack of moisture.  Help!  These are prominent landscape features and I live on a high profile corner in our neighborhood.

Answer
Sounds like you may be dealing with a fungal leaf spot.  Menace is an insecticide and will not treat the brown spots on the leaves.  The concrete driveway does not help either.  I would treat the tree with Daconil fungicide according to label instructions for ornamentals.  The fungal leaf spot is easily controlled, but left unchecked, can cause severe defoliation and a decline in vigor of the tree over years leading to eventual death from some other cause.  As far as the concrete driveway is concerned, there is not much you can do here.  Keep watered as you are doing.  Good Luck.
